Notice that the ‘ones’ or ‘units’ column is in the centre of the soroban.

To the right of this are the decimals, and the left the higher whole numbers.

As you become more familiar with the soroban, it may be more convenient to have the units column in a different position.

The dots on the counting bar called ‘unit points’ help you to keep track of which column you are working with.
